kendra gohr plays the euphonium. our 2026/27 season will be Kendra’s 22nd year with the Northshore Concert Band!
How long have you been playing the euphonium?
I started when I was 9…40 years ago!! I also play trombone (37 years) and tuba (30 years).
Do you have a favorite piece you've performed with the Band? Why?
Any Gustav Holst pieces because that guy knows how to write for euphonium!!!
Is there a NCB concert you'll never forget? Why?
The Midwest Clinic, 2005. I had the opening solo in “Whatsoever Things” and I was so scared I could hardly breathe!!
What's one thing audiences might be surprised to learn about rehearsals?
Rehearsals are more like masterclasses. I have been playing on band for about 40 years now and I still learn something new every Wednesday night.
What's the funniest thing that's happened during a NCB rehearsal or performance?
When Gene Pokorny (Principal Tuba, Chicago Symphony Orchestra) caught me taking a selfie with him in the background (he was sitting in with the band after soloing with us). The look on his face was priceless.
What's one piece of advice you'd give someone thinking about joining a community band?
Just do it!! Playing music is something that you can do for a lifetime. If you haven’t played for years, dust off that hunk of metal, maybe hire a private teacher and join a band. Music will uplift you and keep your mind (& fingers!!) moving forward well into your golden years!
What are you most looking forward to next season?
Learning what we are going to be playing and diving into music with some of the best musicians I know.
