On February 9, 2020, fifty Chicago-area student musicians will perform with the Northshore Concert Band as part of our annual Lifetime of Music program. This celebrated event, now in its 18th year, not only gives the students the opportunity to play side by side with members of a world-acclaimed music ensemble on stage at the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall on the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, Illinois, it provides them with a lasting memory!

I learned how to listen to everyone else while I’m playing,” said a student who participated in this program last year. “I feel that I’ve really improved at playing in an ensemble”.

Participating student musicians are nominated by their band directors and music teachers. This year we will be welcoming 50 students representing 48 schools from 35 cities in Illinois and 64 nominators.

A 2019 nominating educator describes the experience:

“What I and the students get out of the experience is priceless! We all learn how to blend, work on entrances and releases, practice listening better, applying mature musical concepts to performances. Dr. Thompson is giving of her time and talent to better us all…[this] experience cannot have a value placed on it!”

This event is not only a memorable experience for the participating students; it is a highlight for their families. Each year parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings are given the opportunity to see their family member perform on the big stage.

My son had an unforgettable experience playing with Northshore Concert Band. What a great opportunity for students to be part of “something bigger” -even if only for one day.” -2019 Lifetime of Music parent

This program is part of Northshore Concert Bands’ mission to encourage involvement in music for people at all stages of life and assist in the music education of young people. The engaging music education programs demonstrate to younger musicians that there are opportunities for them to play and enjoy their instruments their entire lives, regardless of whether they choose a musical vocation.

Like members of NCB, we hope our guests will become “Musicians for a Lifetime.”
