Eden Schultz plays the Bass Clarinet and has been a member of the Northshore Concert Band for 7 years.
How long have you been playing the bass clarinet?
I switched to the “dark side” of the clarinet family to bass in 7th grade, so just around 16 years!
Do you have a favorite piece you've performed with the Band? Why?
This is almost an impossible question to answer! The piece that has had the greatest impact on my experience at NCB is Dmitri Shostakovich's Prelude in E-flat Minor. While performing it at the Midwest Clinic was certainly a highlight, it was the story behind the music and the vulnerability with which Dr. Thompson guided us through the work that has stayed with me ever since.
Her challenge to perform the piece from memory allowed us to engage with the music on a much deeper level. Rather than focusing on the notes, we were able to perform with complete intention and emotion, creating a more meaningful experience not only for us as musicians but also for our audience.
Is there a NCB concert you'll never forget? Why?
My first performance with NCB in Pick-Staiger Hall! I was still in college and couldn’t believe I was surrounded by so many amazing musicians in such a venue. I remember performing Symphonic Dances from “West Side Story” and thinking - this is a bucket list moment! I had to take a picture of the music on my stand while on stage to commemorate it, in a total geek out moment.
What's one thing audiences might be surprised to learn about rehearsals?
Perhaps this isn't much of a surprise, but as a music teacher, one of the most influential aspects of my experience has been watching how meticulously Dr. Thompson leads rehearsals. I have never experienced such a productive, intentional, and inspiring rehearsal process. The level of preparation and guidance she brings to every rehearsal has shaped my own approach as a teacher, and I consider it one of the greatest privileges of being a member of NCB.
What's the funniest thing that's happened during a NCB rehearsal or performance?
Who could ever forget when my dear section mate, Matt, was assigned the legendary role of “Mountain King” from a performance of In the Hall of the Mountain King? He was born to play the role of this troll king! What a way to bring the bass clarinet section to the forefront!
What are you most looking forward to next season?
I always look forward to collaborating with exceptional musicians in an environment that inspires meaningful experiences for both the audience and ensemble. It is extremely motivating.
