Overview

Program Update: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Christopher Martin and Michael Martin will no longer appear on this program. As a result, Georges Bizet’s Carmen Fantasia for Two Trumpets & Wind Ensemble has been replaced with the final movement of David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 2.

Northshore Concert Band opens its 70th season with a powerful journey from darkness to light. Shostakovich’s Prelude in E-flat Minor sets a somber tone, its weighty harmonies giving way to brilliance and virtuosity as the program unfolds. Adolphus Hailstork’s American Guernica offers a poignant remembrance of four children killed in a racially motivated church bombing in 1963, juxtaposing the terror of the attack with gospel-tinged moments of introspection and hope. The Band presents the world premiere of Never Forgetting, a new work by composer Henry Dorn inspired by the deep emotional resonance that outlasts actions and words. Saint-Saëns’ playful Pas redoublé injects a spark of levity before the program hurtles to its conclusion in the fervent, cathartic finale of David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 2.
