Overview
Fate spins, folk songs echo, and entire worlds collide in a program anchored by two towering works of the repertoire. Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana erupts with pleasure, desire, revelry, and the inexorable pull of fate, while Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy — a landmark of the wind-band canon and a touchstone for generations of players and listeners — preserves six English folk songs in all their color, eccentricity, and rough-hewn character. Helen May Butler’s brilliant Cosmopolitan America brings swagger and pageantry to the program, reflecting the flair of a pioneering bandleader whose command of the American march earned her comparisons to John Philip Sousa. Julie Giroux’s Riften Wed carries a tender vision of lifelong love into the fantastical video game kingdom of Skyrim, wrapped in folk-inflected melody and sweeping cinematic atmosphere.
