Overview
Catapult, Jay Kennedy’s exuberant theme and variations in reverse based on Haydn’s St. Anthony Chorale, launches us into an afternoon of dazzling music for winds. In stark contrast lies Carter Pann’s graceful and gestural Hold This Boy and Listen, emblematic of the composer’s distinct harmonic language. Lauded for his “supreme virtuosity” (The New York Times) and “superhuman ability” (American Record Guide), acclaimed saxophonist Taimur Sullivan makes his NCB debut in William Bolcom’s quirky Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Band.
Amanda Aldridge’s spirited quick-step march, On Parade, sets a lively tone for the second half, followed by captivating interpretations of the beloved American folk song “Shenandoah” by Frank Ticheli and Omar Thomas. Making Waves culminates in a splashy finish with Ticheli’s Blue Shades, playfully mimicking the sounds of a big band with its jazzy episodes, blues harmonies and idioms, and a wailing, Benny Goodman-inspired clarinet solo.
