Community Band Resources
The Community Band: A Manual of Organization and Operation
Throughout its history, NCB has been widely-regarded as a
leader in the development of community bands across the nation. In addition
to performances, recordings, and the sponsorship of three adult band conferences,
NCB also published a comprehensive how-to guide called The Community
Band: A Manual of Organization and Operation, which has been used to start or
improve many community bands in the United States over the past 27 years.
Northshore Concert Band also presented a clinic session at
the 2003 Midwest Clinic entitled "The Successful Community Band: Strategies
On and Off the Podium." A panel of current and former NCB music directors
and administrative leaders discussed musical and organizational lessons
learned over the band's 48 years. Session attendees received CD-ROM containing
over 150 pages of written resources and sample documents pertaining to the
administration of adult bands.
Now, the contents of the CD-ROM is available online for our
fellow community bands and orchestras. Our goal is simply to share with
other community groups what we have found to work for us. Some of the materials
may not be relevant to every group, but there is a wide range of resources
including:
•
NCB's constitution and by-laws,
•
Personnel policies
•
Sample grant proposals and fundraising letters
•
Marketing materials
•
Extensive audience development plan
•
Incorporation and tax information,
•
Volunteer structure,
•
