Matthew Oliphant French horn Featured February 11, 2007

Born and raised in Royal Oak, MI, Matthew Oliphant started his musical studies on piano at age six. He began studying horn a few years later with Susan Mutter, principal horn of the Michigan Opera Theater. He played in the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra, and attended Interlochen Arts Camp on the Emerson Scholarship in 2002, where he played with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. He recently received first prize in the National Federation of Music Clubs Biennial Student Competition and performed with the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria in the summer of 2006. He was invited to the semi-finals of the Minnesota Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition in 2006. Oliphant is a senior at Northwestern University, where he studies with Gail Williams.
