Education / Outreach
Northshore Concert Band is committed to music education and
outreach. Here are just a few examples of how NCB enriches the lives of
music students and residents of Chicagoland with high-quality education
and outreach initiatives:
Lifetime of Music Initiative
Dozens of outstanding Chicago-area high school musicians are invited to join NCB on stage for its February concert each season. This program, in its fifth year, aims to provide a rewarding musical experience to young musicians as well as expose them to the performance opportunities that await them beyond college, whether or not they choose to pursue music as a career.

Festival of Music
Co-sponsored by Northshore Concert Band and Northwestern
University
March 15 & 20, 2008
The Festival of Music, now in its 32nd year, attracts over
4,000 students for a comprehensive musical experience. Public
and private school band directors bring their concert bands
for a 50-minute clinic. In addition, school and private music instructors
bring student
soloists and ensembles to a day of adjudication, recitals,
and specialized classes on wide-ranging musical topics—from instrumental
technique to conducting.
The John P.
Paynter Scholarship
NCB pays tribute to its founder, John
P. Paynter, as it presents its
annual scholarship in his name to an outstanding young
musician each year. Matthew Oliphant, a French horn player currently studying at Northwestern University and the featured guest soloist at the Winter Concert on February
11, 2007, was the recipient of the 2007 award.
Outreach & Community
Concerts
NCB performs several free concerts each year in area schools,
retirement villages, nursing home facilities, and community band shells.
